POST FOR PEACE!
The response to the Post For Peace Blogothon has been wonderful. Thanks, everyone, for standing for peace in this time of war. Because, to paraphrase the words of reggae singer Cedella Marley Booker, if you don't stand up for truth, then you'll fall for anything! Here are my thoughts, also posted at The Blue Republic, with a surprise announcement at the end.
A Chinese proverb says that time changes nothing; people do. When we apply that proverb to the problem of peace, it is sometimes difficult to know just what is effective in trying to create and sustain it. In this country, people who actively work for peace, Cindy Sheehan, Michael Moore, the Crawford Peace House and many, many others, are often reviled and ridiculed for disagreeing with the war in Iraq. On this 4th of July, I’d like to propose that peace is patriotic. Peace makes us all stronger!
So what is peace? Peace is a puzzle that requires work. Peace is more than the absence of conflict. And peace making is more than stopping war. It includes embracing democratic ideals and protecting human rights.
To create peace, we must work for peace, law, order and justice as opposed to war, chaos and revenge. Violence creates more violence. Peace work includes insuring the continuation and strength of the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution and fighting those who would water down or eliminate our basic rights.
To sustain peace, we need international treaties such as the Geneva Conventions, and we need to follow them without picking and choosing which parts suit our political agenda. We need to actively listen to and cooperate with other institutions that promote peace, such as the United Nations, instead of acting like the U.N is our lapdog. Assassinations, torture, wiretapping, and preemptive war are all counter to peace.
In 2003, just prior to the outbreak of our invasion of Iraq, TIMEeurope.com asked their (mostly European) readers: "Who really poses the greatest danger to world peace? Iraq, North Korea or The United States."
The publishers recorded nearly 700,000 responses. And the tally was: (6.7%)North Korea, (6.3%) Iraq and (86.9%) The U.S.
The Europeans feared that we were the biggest threat to peace and the Iraqi war has confirmed their worst fears about us. Numerous factors, such as justice, power, national interest, ethnic rivalry, hunger, the environment, values, human nature, and economics, have an impact on world peace.
Today's real borders are not between nations, but between powerful and powerless, free and fettered, privileged and humiliated. Today, no borders can separate humanitarian or human-rights crises in one part of the world from national-security crises in another. Conflict and wars often lead to poverty and economic problems that continue the cycle of poverty and unrest and more war. Scarcity of resources, greed and lack of education contribute to war as well.Sustainable development is also a factor in creating peace. Sustainable development is more than just the maintenance of resource flows; it requires that community members are in agreement about which shared interests override their individual ones. Ending poverty and war go hand in hand with peace and are dependent on creating a social organization to facilitate social consensus and peace. And sustainable development must be created in ways that do not destroy the environment of the region.
With these issue in mind, I'd like to announce that I am partnering with The Blue Republic to create a sister website, The Peace Train.org, whose mission is to explore the ways that we can all work toward a better understanding of what peace is. Additionally, its goal is to serve as a hub for peaces activists around the country and hopefully, the world, and to help in the work of making peace a reality. We will be adding to this site over time to include other features, such as a place to coordinate antiwar activities regionally.
This is a huge undertaking and I want to publicly thank Jeff and Dude for their support and help. Dude has single-handedly volunteered his time to do the physical setup of the site. Without his support, I could not imagine getting this done. I have so much to learn. I also want to thank all the others who have given me support on this project. You know who you are.
Dude and I have a lot of ideas and welcome your further help to make this both an interesting, educational and useful place to come and work (and play) for peace. If peace is to become more than just a mantra, it must address the specific needs of people in specific communities through their own collective and collaborative efforts. Let’s all join together as a community to work toward making peace a reality. So I urge you to come on over to The Peace Train and join! (It's free!)And Glenda will stick around here as well, at least for now.

Glenda, you rock. I'm hopping on the Peace Train right now.
awesome, PT and it has your initials too.
Great post and great job Glenda. Loving the Peace Train.
I'd like to be a passanger on this train, just let me know where to hop on.
Thanks for your efforts on bringing people together today.
It seems we have plenty of discussion and debate. Much of it seems to be on the extreme side.
As much as the left hates Ann Coulter, the right hates Michael Moore. Because each side see these people as talking in the extreme.
The left not only needs to unite themselves, but they need to work on compromise with the moderate right. Neither side has the correct answer to everything.
We need to bring back the art of civil debate and compromise; and get rid of the gotcha lines and the never retreat attitude.
Glenda,
I'm posting for peace on my primary blog at Why Am I Not Surprised.
Sorry for the confusion.
Beautiful post Ms.Glenda..your a vessel for Peace, and a fine, upstanding Patriot.
fantastic! thanks so much for this idea and forum. hopefully we can all build on this and help you with your peace train.
time, come sign up. I am honestly open to suggestions. Let's begin the dialoue over there. When you sgn up, you can safely iM the other members there while maintaining your personal privacy, if that is your wish. thee is so much to think about and consider. We do not want to shoot ourselves in the collective feet, and rthere is a way to speak the truth while being diplomatic and considerate.
changeseeker, I'll make corrections right now. Thanks for letting me know Sorry!
thanks, dusty and betmo. you guys are awesome too!
Glenda,
This is a wonderful idea. I'm joining in with the posting for peace. I think, though, I'll write in Portuguese because a great part of my readers only read in this language, but I'll put links to your blog. I hope this is ok.
Cheers,
Anita
Posting for Peace at Words Have Power as well. Thanks for leading the way.
Great job Glenda!
anita, yes, potugesa es muy bueno, sorry, I only know Spanish.
I'll be happy to add your URL. Thanks!
rjb, will add you too!
Thanks, elizabeth, isn't it amazing what people can do together!
What a lovely thing you are doing here.
Glenda,
Sorry for the delay in getting on board for this. It took me a while to think of something apropos, but I was at PoP's Morning Martini and inspiration hit...here's my comment that became my post:
It's all quiet in the coffin. For some, death is the only way to achieve peace. But in the days rich with the rhetoric spawned by the "culture of lifer" types, can't we think of a better pathway to peace that doesn't involve killing? In many ways, the W, Rove and Co's "war on terror" is the antithesis of their espoused pro-life ideology?
Certainly, Ghandi was right and smarter than all the politicos in charge these days, wasn't he?
glenda, thank you for being the engineer on this Peace Train. The more we can unify voices for peace, the sooner we can effect a change. I applaud you, and I honor this group effort.
time says: "As much as the left hates Ann Coulter, the right hates Michael Moore. Because each side see these people as talking in the extreme." The main difference between Michael Moore and Ann Coulter is that Michael Moore researches his facts, and always differentiates between fact and opinion. Ms. Coulter spews hate, without fact checking; and often simply plagarizes.
It took me a bit, but I got it up HA
Blogging for peace over at the Dharma Bums. Thanks for a great idea.
My sister is calling y'all dirty hippies but I'm afraid she's a little bit upset because of her recent abortion. Btw, has anyone seen her?
Glenda,
I am now a member of the peace train, see you there.
divajood,
I think Ann Coulter's hate is much worse than Michael Moores. But imagine how this quote from Michael Moore could instill hate from the right, and the middle.
Michael Moore said,
"If the hijacked civilians of 9/11 had been black, they would have fought back, unlike the stupid and cowardly white men and women."
Michael Moore
To me, this is not the track the peace train should take, nor will it get us more passengers.
Congrats on an excellent idea Glenda. Will see if I can send a few more this way....
Count Terrorism News in.
Thanks, I'm expecting a hord of hungry family any minute to walk in my front door, but I'll add all your links as soon as I can!
Glenda !!
I'm late - but still the 4th - I've posted for peace.
Thanks for your enthusiasm... It's important !
Amy
Glenda...this has been an awe inspiring experience and I am very proud to have been included in such a company of articulate people. If the loons in the madministration were to come after us today...we would stand stalwart in our resolution to never stop writing for the freedom of American ideals...and peace for all. Thank you and Happy 4th!
My post is now up (I decided to sleep in).
You've done such a great job getting people to help out on this, perhaps you can get people to sign up for this --- 9/11 tribute to the victims ---

I've signed up. They have bout 700 out of 2,996. Check it out please.
This has been a fun and wonderful way to all get on the same page at the same time. Glenda, your drinks are always on the house at Morning Martini. :)
PEACE!
Pamela at The Democratic Daily has stepped up to the plate after my post there about this.

Congrats on the the days success. Have a wonderful holiday!
Wow. While I have been entertaining family, you all have been busy!!
I am wowed by all of you!
Gratz on how well this has gone Glenda. I've read so many great pieces.
Never doubt a small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
~ Margaret Mead
thank you for being one of those thoughtful people Glenda - you are already changing the world.
glad to be a part of this.
Well, it took me a while, but I finally made it around to every one of your posts. I'm stunned by the richness, beauty, thoughtfullness, crispness, and goodness of the people who showed up for this.
thank you, thank you ,thank you.
Thank you Glenda!
This was really an inspiring idea, Glenda and all.
The posts and pics have all helped renew my hope for America in the 21rst Century.
Peace & Salut!
A great idea as well as a great post, thanks for getting the ball rolling.
The Katrinacrat is gonna keep up the banner. Since my birthday is in a couple of days, and it happens to be the same b-day as Bush, I refuse to take down the caption in my header.
I will put out more pics and take the hair with the hide. I refuse to bow down to that boy king. This Former Marine is not setting down his sword anytime soon. I have a lot more to say, and Post I will! I might even make this a month of July-ied-and-killed-my-people post.
Thanks, Glenda...let's keep the movement rolling.
glenda i just want to extend my thanks to you for many things but i'll start with organizing this.
i just stopped by peace train and joined (well i didn't get my email to activate yet, but if i don't i'll just try again).
again, i thank you
beth, the train is roling...
rose, that's great. I'll see you there!
please count me in!
peace,
peter
Glenda - this was a great idea. I've visited everybody's sites and I'm just so moved and so impressed.
Great idea from a great person.
What kind of peace are these kids going to find when they come home and discover that the cause they have been fighting for is a lie? Or when they wake up in the middle of the night with night terroros? I wish our returning vets inner peace
IMAGINE
Words and Music by John Lennon
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
yes, IMAGINE!!!
