Global Warming Field Trip

Forget the neutrality of "climate change." In a report to Congress, the National Academy of Sciences says global warming is the real deal. After two millennia of relatively stable temperatures, our planet is the hottest it has been in 400 years.

So what are we going to do about it?? Al Gore says in his movie "An Inconvenient Truth," that there are some concrete things that we as individuals and as a nation can do to reverse this pattern.

I decided to ask my good friend, and the president of his college Science Club and Chess team president, Happy Feller. I asked Happy about his personal plan to fight global warming, since he is The Happy Man on Campus and a Science and Environmental Brain Award recipient as well.

He invited me to hang out with him. So we started walking down the street to the bus stop together. We stopped briefly and talked to
our good friends WeezieLou and Earl, who was spreading mulch on his wife's flower beds. (Be sure and click on Earl's link, as he has some handy tips for you as well on his Friday night blog.)

Neither Happy nor I smoke, but he saw another neighbor smoking and talked to him about cigarette smoke polluting the atmosphere. I was unimpressed. How can that make a difference, I wondered?

Next we went to the library where he looked up the addresses of his state and national congress varmints and wrote letters to all of them imploring them to act quickly on this issue.

He also caught up on the back issues of Mother Jones while we were there and read a few revolutionary links that Celticfire and Ladycelticfire had sent him. He also said hi to Stella, who was using the computer in the library, checking out the poetry section.
Happy got on the computer and read a few sites that had good information.

An article written by Elizabeth Brandon at The Blue Republic caught his eye. He read that and smiled as he scribbled a picture of a small lily.

Then he went out and we got some lunch. We ran into LeftofCenter, who was there with his family and he gave me some great photography tips.
We sat down and ate hurriedly.

How much energy had gone into making the food we ate, I wondered, and in air-conditioning the restaurant? Energy that was heating up the planet.

We got to the copy shop and Happy made Xerox copies of the list he had created with ideas that we as individuals can do to lower the pollution in the air. He was going to post them on his neighbors' front doors, especially his close friend Rex, who had good intentions, but thought it was his patriotic duty to buy a new gas-guzzling SUV.

His list wasn't very long, but gosh, darn, he tried. And he made extra copies of the letters to his congressvarmints, too, while we were there, a few even had his buttcheck prints on them.
Then it was time to mail the letters. We took the bus. It was a hot Texas day and it made me wonder how much the buses were polluting the atmosphere. I happened to look up on one of the overpasses and noticed some anti-war posters. I figured they were the work of PTCruiser! Oh, how we both giggled over that.

We finally arrived at the Post Office just before it was closing time. We bought the stamps and the letters to Congress were mailed! Mission Accomplished. What else could we do? It was still light out, barely. Soon it would be time for me to go home. As we were coming out the soor, we saw Sumo heading in to check her peace mail. And Peacechick Mary was right behind her with Pissed Off Patricia, who was still drinking her morning martini.

We got to the corner and saw Graeme, who was heading off to a union rally. By the end of the day, I was really tired of fighting global warming and decided to take a break.

We headed toward 6th Street and engaged in a friendly game of pool with the poetryman. I was ready for that warm glass of beer while I sharpened my poolstick and called corner left pocket in a game of stripes and solids.

But I was still not satisfied. Weren't there more things we sould be doing to help reduce the effects of global warming?

Since Happy Feller wore me out, I decided to ask my readers if they could help fill in the blanks on this weighty global warming question and help come up with some suggestions for people, things they can do in their own lives to help out. Please tell me, what do you do, or what would you like to start doing?

Thanks Glenda. I'm going to have nightmares about that fucking thing.

I just had a Bush supporter tell me "it's only 1 degree." Hah. I love flat-Earth people.

you realize that the creationists will never believe the scientists- and god knows that you are preaching to the choir here. half of this country doesn't believe in science- scary freakin thought.

Very clever Glenda. I say it starts w/our choice of automobiles. But from the looks of things on the roads it's not high on many peoples priority list.

Yes, very clever glenda. Since you've got me in the great outdoors, I'm gonna recommend organic clothing from the only store with products from certified organic hemp fiber, sustainable and sweatshop free.

Products for a fragile planet. Remember you can wear it, write on it, wash with it, and eat it - but you can't smoke it.

I've got a gas furnace and a firplace, unfortunately the fireplace has a cracked liner, so we can only burn a gas-log in it. Otherwise I would want to get my hands on "Lucky", he looks like he would burn real good.

Good comments and good ideas. My next car will definitely be a Prius.
And why don't Americans worry about this? They are told by the media that it's a liberal conspiracy thery!

i sell cars, and work very hard to sell hybrids, with some success. of course, a disgusting amount of people come here and STILL buy SUV's. i just want to smack them!

glenda, didn't you see me on your trip with happy fella? i was the one looking deep, brooding and pensive in the coffee shop.

There is nothing to be done in the face of mankind's pluralistic ignorance, short-term egocentrism and plain stupidity. As ever, Glenda, that's a great post and very funny. And weepfully sad.

Very creative Glenda! Awesome post. Happy Feller scares me, but in a good way.

I am not the biggest Gore fan but my god, how much of a difference would somebody that actually believes in science make at the White House? When the stakes are this high, even a little difference can be huge.

Here's what we do in Belgium:
-we ride our bikes everywhere (you are more likely to be hit by a biker than a car). Better for the environment, better for the butt.
-there is an excellent public transport system so we leave the car at home almost all the time (diesel is $6/gallon, regular unleaded about $7/gallon--you see why)
-we buy A class energy rated applianaces that use very little power (and water for washers and dishwashers)
-most of our toilets have two buttons--one for low flush, one for a full flush to save water.
-we live in Flanders (northern Belgium) where we recycle over 70% of our garbage (and even have a compost pick up that turns our table scraps into compost that people can buy for cheap--natural fertilizer).

well, shit! i have these new progressive lenses....guess they don't progress enough.....(i was still brooding in the coffee shop tho - don't wreck my image and make me sound sociable!)

Hi, Graeme, since the president can't read, it's also unlikely he beleives in science. It's the ignorance is the "highest good state" thing.

sothis- good idea when your community has dense living space. My city grew wwith the understanding back then that oil was everywhere and acreage was cheap, so unban sprawl is the problem coupled with the lack of a good transportation system. We now have "ozone acion" days when the ozone is so bad that the city lets people ride the bus for free. Good idea except The problem is the bus does not go anywhere near one's neighborhood. My area is also now creating dense condos downtown to allow people to walk or bike to work, the problem being that they are not affordable to the average worker. Oh, and there is a plan for all city-owned administrative cars to transition over to hybrids.

I wan to urge everyone to go over to Earl's (linked in the article and in my blogbar) to see his tips on this!

I will stop by your "friends" blogs later, but I do adore this post. If people are not aware how much pollution they cause, they only need to go to

http://climatecrisis.net

You can take a quiz that educates you at the same time about what in your daily life you can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Like using your dishwasher less, changing all bulbs to flourescent, the list is endless and every single tiny bit helps.

At our humble abode, where the temps are reaching over a 100 daily, we use evaporative coolers, aka swamp coolers instead of air conditioners..we are wiping out a ton of emissions with that one thing alone...although the swamp coolers suck during periods of high humidity..its a price we pay in our house to help the cause.

thanks for stopping by my blog glenda, you rock :)

Hi Glenda. Your car(s) should be well maintained and check the air in the tires. Less air, more gas, more emissions. Set your a/c, if you live in hot country, up to 79 or 80 when you run it. Plant some trees and shrubs, especially those that don't need a lot of water and are natural to your area. Those are just some of the ideas that popped into my head reading about Happy and you and your tour.

At 3:13 PM, Blogger glenda said...

Thanks, dusty and Epof22. great additions from both of you. I will check out that site.

Purchase energy-saving light bulbs. Turn off the lights when leaving a room.

Turn off power strips for equipment not in use. Unplug chargers not in use.

Lower the temperature on the hot water heater. Wash clothes in cold water when possible.

Eat more plant foods. Fewer packaged foods.

Plan weekend shopping, entertainment to cut down on amount of driving.

Thanks, Glenda.

Good post Glenda even though Happy is kinda scary. After spending a few days with the Navajo and seeing what a prolonged drought can do to people that have lived for hundreds of years on minimal water I can transpose their experience into what we are facing when it comes to energy and the effects of global climate change. Sobering.

At 12:01 PM, Blogger glenda said...

so PT stands for public transportation? :) Wish we had it where I live.

fallenmonk, good to see you. The Navajo in the drought lands must be like the people in that book Dune, very efficient with water use.

We watch the signs

We watch the signs in numbness and regret.
Midwinter summer, chaos in the year,
And still our money’s on the outside bet.

Why this unease? We know that some upset
Will switch our fortunes, now at full career.
We watch the signs in numbness and regret:

The hurricanes, the polar ice in sweat,
The rising heat, the changing atmosphere,
And still our money’s on the outside bet….

Oh, if our stumbling nag would only get
A move on…. But it won’t. Let’s have a beer
And watch the signs, in numbness and regret.

It isn’t over till the end, and yet
It’s over long before. Hopes disappear,
And still our money’s on the outside bet.

By now they’ve reached the final straight, and yet
We look away, while at the edges, clear,
We note the signs in numbness and regret.
And still our money’s on the outside bet.
