Update on Tom DeLay and the Ruckus in Brazos County

Have been following the goings-on down in Brazos County, Tom DeLay's old district here in south Texas close to Houston. Thanks to Juanita, home of Juanita's, World's Most Dangerous Hair Salon, who keeps me up on this, there is a new mini-drama going on down there.

Seems there was a ruckus on April 6 when some of Tom DeLay's brownshirts were told to attend a political rally for the Democratic contender Nick Lampson and started aggressing, pushing and shouting at his supporters.

One woman, Marsha Rovai, a 69 year-old retired CPC worker was assaulted and knocked down by two of these goons. One of them, the guy in the white Tee shirt and "failure to communicate" sunglasses, as shown in the photo, was one of the aggressors, and is also the head of the Grand Jury in Sugar Land, Texas.

To see pictures posted by Miz Juanita:

This website is dedicated to ground zero for democracy. Thanks to Congressvarmint Tom DeLay and Governor Rick Perry, the good people of the Texas 22nd will soon be the only people in America since 1776 to have taxation without representation. Our forefathers shed blood over this. However, our local Republicans think it's just hunkey dorey, and they will hit you if you try to say otherwise.

Anyway, it just gets better. The assulted woman, Marsha Rovai, went to the Sugar Land Police Department to make a complaint and file charges for assault and the police refused to take her statement.

Juanita says:
That's not surprising since the Mayor of Sugar Land, David Wallace, is a close friend of Tom DeLay's and is openly running for the Republican nomination for the seat.

By the way, the Democrats had permission to be there and the Republicans did not.

If you could please let the City of Sugar Land know that you do not believe it is acceptable for men to do to Marsha what they did, it might send a message that every citizen has the right to expect safety in Sugar Land Town Square. Please be polite, make no threats, or use bad language. We don't want them to think that you're a Republican, now do we?
So Juanita posted the phone numbers of the Sugar Land Police Department and City offices and asked people to call and protest. This is one righteous troublemaking woman! She added:

I have a theory that the more crap you put up with, the more crap you're gonna to get. Let's face them down right here right now.

One more thing, Dexter says, "Exercising free speech and opposing Democrats on their voting record is not against the law.” You'd think the foreman of the Grand Jury would check the law before he spouts off. Remember: Dexter was instructed by DeLay's campaign manager to "wreck" Lampson's press conference.

Texas Penal Code, Section 42.05

42.05. DISRUPTING MEETING OR PROCESSION. (a) A person commits an offense if, with intent to prevent or disrupt a lawful meeting, procession, or gathering, he obstructs or interferes with the meeting, procession, or gathering by physical action or verbal utterance.
(b) An offense under this section is a Class B misdemeanor

Anyway, yesterday Miz Marsha Rowe went back tothe Sugar Land Police Department with a lawyer, and there was achange of heart as they took her statement. Juanita reports:

Marsha Rovai returned to the Sugar Land Police Department today with a highly respected lawyer and it was all the difference between day and night.

Two officers interviewed her, asked her for copies of the tapes, and promised to review the case. Thank you to everybody who emailed the police chief
.
INFREAKINGCREDIBLE! Kudos on reporting this and mobilizing people, Juanita!!

This story is unbelievable to me. Not in the sense that I don't think such things can happen, I know better. But that there isn't public outcry, etc.

You should see some of the shenanigans we have to pull to get them to press charges against sex offenders. This is Texas. Welcome to my world.
Where Mexico meets the road and cops can be bought. (You just think that doesn't happen where you live!)

I even had one prosecutor tell me they didn't have rape in his county. Domestic violence either....

It's a old dirty story

Conservatives view politics as war. In war, one tries to demoralize and destroy the enemy, seize his territory and gain unconditional surrender. And as Alberto Gonzales, our next Attorney General, has argued in an international context, in war there are no rules.

Liberals engage in politics as a contact sport. In politics, like football, people get injured. But even violent sports have rules. Rule-breakers receive penalties, including being thrown out of the game. And in sports, when the game ends, people shake hands, and differences are set aside.

This difference in approach results in a telling and visible difference in tactics and strategy. At the Democratic convention, word went out that it was to be a positive affair, pro-Kerry, not anti-Bush. The Republican Convention, on the other hand, accentuated the negative. It was a savage affair. Contrast the content and style of the keynote address of Barack Obama at the Democratic convention with that of Zell Miller at the Republican convention. When Reverend Al Sharpton went off-script in a speech that energized everyone at the Convention, Democratic leaders and commentators quickly distanced themselves from his comments.

yes sir- it is LONG PAST time to break out the baseball bats.

I love it when that bunch of wimps talks tough. If they come at me with a baseball bat they'd better be ready for their colon to be wearing it.

That's really a good story. There's a book Princess, I forgot the author, but it really opened my eyes to how badly women are treated in the Middle East. This book talks specifically about Saudi Arabia but it applies to most of the other countries over there. One of the main points is how there is a very fine line between rape and adultery. People are killed for committing adultery, even if they were raped. It is very scary to think that the same thing is going on in our country. Its great to see that Marsha's assault case is getting attention. Maybe there is hope after all...

Just when it's as bad as it gets, you find out it's worse.

DeLay's scandals: maybe not just for Texas anymore

By this point in the GOP scandal-a-day marathon, I think it's safe to stipulate that the matrix of interconnections between the multitude of sleazeballs in today's Republican Party is wide, deep, and tangled — a priori, Tom DeLay is probably at least a fringe player in all of them. Still, who would have ever thought that the mother of all Republican corruption (R-Tx) would care much about directly influencing elections in New Hampshire?

In the widening investigation of the 2002 New Hampshire election eve phone jamming scheme, perpetrated by the state Republican committee, all of a sudden DeLay's name has surfaced. By this time, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised. Still, it seems that every time an investigation pulls on a loose thread in a GOP scandal anywhere in the U.S., Tom DeLay's initials seem to be monogramed into the fabric. In this case, the Houston Chronicle reports that one of DeLay's shell organizations appears to be the prime financial backer of the phone jamming scheme...

Nothing surprises me at this point. DeLay was prbably involved in many things we don't know about.

I hear the keys jangling in their pockets and I can smell the scent of chewing tobacco from here! Bastards should never mess with "little senior citizens"! Especially a woman with a fire in her belly and an inferno in her soul that'd out Tom and his cronies on their backs begging for mercy! Let it be so! :>)

It would be nice to have a record of this on video, something to show future generations how crazy things became in this country before the Republicans were swept out of office. This is the behavior of a party in the last throes. Good riddance.

Good to see a happy ending to that story. Thanks for the follow-up, Glenda.

Yes, however, I think the story is still evolving as Tom Delay has still not officially dopped out from the race.

In fairness, the Texas 22nd would be the only people in America since 1776 to have taxation without representation only if you don't count the entire population of the District of Columbia. But then I guess most Republicans don't really count us anyway. At least we get to say it on our license plates.
