Thinking About Molly Ivins and Global Warming

Molly Ivins is a great Austin writer, commentator of politics and a warm human being with a great smile. I've also seen her over the years at various functions around town and she is a very funny speaker. She writes about what she knows. She writes on AlterNet, although she is published in newspapers and other websites.

It was warm today and I was puttering around in the garden, shooting pictures and doing some light weeding, as you can see from the pictures below. I was thinking about how each leaf shooting upward from the earth was a perfect work of art.

I worried briefly how we would be able to grow enough food to feed the planet if the weather became more volatile, which I believe has begn happening. Then I came inside for lunch and saw this. Molly wrote a piece on global warming. These short paragraphs in her article stood out for me.

The political fight over global warming is over, except for the Bush administration, which has some weird problem with science in general. I'm still not sure what's behind that: I recall Rush Limbaugh and the radio right taking great glee in pooh-poohing the Kyoto treaty and the whole idea of global warming. Maybe they associated global warming with Canadians or something equally awful.

You might think some premise like, "The whole world is getting hotter, and disastrous consequences will ensue," would be more persuasive than, "I don't like Canadians, they're wusses," but I suspect part of the fun of being Rush Limbaugh is never having to say the word "responsible."

This is so accurate that I just don't have much more to add, other than right on, sister. Never having to say the word "responsible" or BE resposible is why we are in this mess with global warming in the first place.

Yes, I read her too, and love her style.

And yes- I think she is right on with these observations.

Hmmm...Molly Ivins as president and Sen. Barbara Boxer as vice-president.

Molly is my hero: always dead on in her perceptions.

She has an uncanny radar to truth without being preachy.

"Love Means Never Having To Say You're Responsible." Or was that 'sorry'...? Well, both apply in Bush's case, I guess.

I uderstand the Pianka situation is getting very, very ugly. I've been reading about members of the Texas Academy of Science, and people there are getting death threats over Pianka's Distinguished award status.

If you're the kind of person whose worldview includes such moral imperatives as abortion is murder, climate change is bunk, economic growth at any cost, etc., you, too, would be outraged by Pianka. He is, after all, accusing you of destroying the natural conditions for life on this planet. Guilty as charged.

Year, I've been reading about him. The "we need to plan our collapse rather than just let it happen to us" guy. Didn't he want to do in 90% of the people on the planet?

That's Texas for ya, never a dull moment down here.

Glenda I got my data from The Panda's Thumb that this matter is a Right-wing hoax due to Gut-Feelie science and Right-Wing insanity.

The Panda's Thumb on Pianka

The wingnut echo chamber has recently gone insane over the idea that Eric Pianka, an distinguished and much-loved ecologist at UT, advocates mass genocide by ebola in order to bring down world population. The allegation was leveled by disgruntled creationist Forrest Mims, and rapidly spread to the blogosphere via places like Dembski’s blog (three posts!) and Telic Thoughts, and then went to the Drudge Report and caused a national media firestorm appearing in my local paper by Monday morning. I smelled a rat from the beginning, and now I have been proved right. KXAN News36 in Austin, TX, has just debunked the whole thing, and for good measure has posted a 20-minute unedited interview with Pianka which everyone must watch to realize the full depravity of what the wingnuts have done here. Pianka says several times that Mims is a “crazy kook” that “distorted and changed everything I said.” The death threats that have flooded Pianka and the Texas Academy of Sciences are also a nice touch.

Pianka is clearly an ecological alarmist, and his twin theses that (1) a population crash is coming and (2) a disease (not Ebola, says Pianka) will do it are both highly debatable (my own view is that population is leveling off as birthrates decline due to education, and that highly virulent diseases are more likely to burn themselves out than take out the majority of the population), but these are matters to debate scientifically.

There is no way to get from that to saying, as Mims and hundreds of braindead, credulous moonbats did, that Pianka advocates genocide and that several hundred scientists at the Texas Academy of Sciences applauded him for it.

Hello, helleo, hello
I see you were up past my bedtime, hope you live in another time zone!
One must check their facts carefully, however anything that happens in this state is also likely to have at least some truth, as wingnus like DeLay, Bush, and all the friends Bush dragged with him to Washington hae been good theater and bad poicy..
Earl, you are nominated as the Head of the Research Department in Oz.

Same time-zone, but I usually sleep-in late in the mornings. Today we're going outa town, and will be back late tomorrow, so I won't be commenting late tonite, unless someone brings a laptop.

With the source of this, being one of the ID people I don't think it has to have much, or any truth to it. But thats just me.

I think it's might be like the truth, that was in the run-up to the war, in Iraq. Little if any.

Earl's a treasure, and of course so is Molly.
You asked on my blog about my leaving TX and going to NC - Tomcat's folks live there, having retired from Buffalo (ugh) several years ago. They're not getting any younger, and neither are we, so we'd like to be closer to them. Not too close, you understand :) but at least in the same state.
However, if the rent house doesn't sell this time, we'll stay here for another couple of years.

So, you have a brother selling a house in Dallas. My late brother taught martial arts, which I saw on your profile that you also do.

Have a great trip to Austin and take lots of pics!

I don't really teach martial arts, although I have co-taught women's self-defense classes some years ago, I helped co-teach but the true teacher was a guy, a dear friend with 3 black belts, who volunteered his time for these women. Right now, I probably know just enough to get into trouble. But my college-age son teached Aikido and has a black belt.

Thanks, I'll bring back pictures from Crawford, for sure!!!
