Republicans urge Bush to fight high gasoline costs

WASHINGTON (Rotters) - Republican leaders urged Bush to fight back and investigate whether oil companies are gouging consumers. They also wondered aloud whether by invading Iraq and failing to institute an oil-conservation policy they themselves had worsened the problem. If the latter proved to be the case, they urged Bush to bitchslap himself.

U.S. retail gasoline prices are forecast to keep rising as no one in the government wants to offend the oil lobby... Republicans fear they could lose the Senate and House of Representatives in this November's congressional elections if voters retaliate against them for the high fuel prices and for all their other screw-ups, and especially for starting the War in Iraq.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a frist-class jackass who is exploiting this situation for his own gain and possible run for the presidency and House Speaker Dennis Hastert, the guy who failed tp deliver his promise on the lobbying disclosure bill, wrote President Dubya and asked him to direct the U.S. Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission to crack down on price gouging.

"Go get ‘em, tiger,” they said. “Anyone trying to take advantage of this situation while American families are forced to make tough choices over whether to fill up their cars or sell their children should be investigated and shot," the lawmakers said in their joint letter to Bush. Bush put on his boxing trunks and waded in swinging.

If Bush wants to find out the cause of the 'Pain at the Pump' he might first look in a mirror.

It's not "gouging", it's . . .
" . . . energy companies hav[ing] more efficient ways of making excess profits."

Profiteering, gouging, letting the market forces "decide" . . . whatever you want to call it. I know that Americans are spoiled rotten (in the global scheme of things), but the average American will reach a tipping point when the combined weight of health care costs, petroleum costs, falsely-premised war costs, and corporate tax giveaway costs will cause an actual REACTION.

Slap those goddam hogs away from the trough. They've had enough.

Sending letters to King Codepiece is a wonderful way to accomplish our goals and do a lot of good. NOT!

Wow! Great post!! I am adding you to my reading list.

Not much to add except that I commute from Ft. Worth to Dallas and my gas costs are making me think I need to find a job much closer to home. It's ridiculous!!

They wrote a letter to the president?? How very courageous of them. He'll file it along with all the anti-war letters.

The hogs are so fat they can no longer waddle away from the trough. And a lot of Americans have given up.

I would trust Osama Bin Laden with homeland security before I trusted Bush with oil prices.

in 1999 he criticized Clinton for not "jawboning" the Saudis when gas was at $1.40. Now with gas at $3.00 has bush jawboned anyone? has he done anything?

Well, he did do something. He gassed up air force one and flew all the way across the damned country to tell people in California that he was aware oil prices were high. Then he gassed up air force one again and flew all the way back across the damned country

Take a close look at the investigation they're requesting.

Yes, one component of it is to look at price gouging, but it also directs the EPA to investigate the costs of their regulations and issue waivers.

I hate to link to my own blog, but I've got that section clipped out of a WaPo article Saturday morning here.

Again, sorry, not trying to cross plug, just trying to get the real slime of this trojan horse investigation out.

Mike

we all know how effective the bushies and fellow repubs investigating themselves has been. hell just might freeze over through global warming before anything is done with these people. i may be idealistic but i can't see frist seriously considering a run with his baggage. keeping my fingers crossed.

Wow, it looks like we have a make-over here. Glenda has a pretty new outfit. It looks neat and fits your goodly witch image but keeps the same Wizard's hard-hitting voice from beyond the curtain.

I have a hunch that I am not going to win a popularity contest here but this just has to come out of my chest:

You Americans have a major attitude problem with thinking that cheap energy is some how your god given right. The cheap energy has been kind of blessing in disquise and feeling that the situation would go on for ever has killed initiatives and innovations on alternatives to fuel your economy. America has already lost it's edge in being on cutting edge of new technologies while once mighty auto industry, due to it's inability to think fresh, is shrinking and on it's knees.

Besides, gas price in the world's third largest oil producer, Norway, is over $6/gal. Put that in your tank and burn it!

Well, personally, to be honest, I never had that expectation.
I also don't expect that we will ever have cheap fuel sources again.
