Defining the November Campaign Slogan

In an article published in the New York Times today, author Tim Roehmer asks what the pussilient Democrats will do to show some leadership and define the issues instead of once again letting the Republicans take the ball and run as they sit back and react, eyes blinking like lizards in the sunlight.

He suggests giving them a campaign slogan and writes:
In January, President Bush's adviser Karl Rove outlined the issues he believes will lead Republican candidates to victory in November: national security, the economy and taxes, and the courts. Democrats cannot allow Republicans to define the terms of the debate. Instead, they should take a page from history and from a different Karl.

In 1946, Karl Frost, an advertising executive, suggested a simple slogan to the Massachusetts Republican Committee: "Had Enough? Vote Republican!" Frost recognized that these simple words could unite his national party and blame its opponents, who controlled Congress, for causing or failing to solve the many problems facing the country, including meat shortages, economic difficulties and labor unrest. The strategy worked: in 1946, both houses of Congress flipped.

Sixty years later, Democrats would be smart to turn Karl Frost's slogan on Karl Rove's strategy.
He goes on to suggest the slogan, Had Enough? Vote Democratic! It sums up the feeling of the country right now.

The Demos need to get back in the ring and come out swinging instead of being on the defensive.

Here are some "variations on a theme"campaign ads that I would like to see.

i vote for the last one- the rights being eroded. although all of them are great. it's really sad that we don't really have a party to back- other than the default party. hope someone grows some balls between now and november.

Some brilliant stuff you've done here! We can only hope the Democrats would be gutsy enough to adopt this approach.

I just cant agree with "had enough? vote Democratic." It's as if Democrats are now the choice simply because the other guys screwed up. We should be running on a platform of winners that win no matter what the other guy has done. How about a picture of New Orleans residents floating in the water and the caption says. " People First, Vote Democratic.".

How about:

A picture of a gas station with its high prices - overlayed with a hundred dollar bill - with the slogan within the hundred dollar bill.

OR

Pictures of flag draped coffins arriving at Dover - with the slogan on the picture.

OR

A picture of the Supreme Court Justices in their formal sitting - with a list of convicted administration members and their crimes - and the slogan on the bottom.

Love these ideas.

LOc you have a point! Regardless of who is in power, they need to be oriented to people before the other big interests.

Those are all great - my favorite is the boxer on her back (the R v W one).

For anyone interested. I happen to have an extra bumper sticker that says those exact words: Had Enough? Vote Democratic"

I have extra magnets and can mount one on a magnet for anyone interested, and mail it out ASAP.

Let me know, I only have one left.

How about:

No more special intrest groups
No more Lobbyists
No more focus groups
No more think tanks

Stop trampling our basic freedoms

No more one party state

Depends on who runs on the Dem ticket. If it's Kerry - we could say, Want more of the same? Vote Democratic. I hope Americans are ready for something good and grand and wonderful and insist on it.

Good point Mary!

I agree with LOC but also think I've been asking a bit too much of the Democrats...

They are after all only slightly better.

I really like the PIMP one! Great job Glenda!

Love the "trample your rights" poster.

Great concept, so much better than the DNCs "We can do better", which is so pussilient.

To LoCs comment, "Had Enough" can also become more specific like

Had Enough Lying?
Had Enough War?
Had Enough War-on-the-Middle Class?
Had Enough No-Bid-Contracts?
Had Enough Incompetence?
Had Enough ChildCare Cuts?
Had Enough Tax Cuts For-the-Rich?
Had Enough Pollution?
Had Enough Star-Wars?
Had Enough Bridges-to-Nowhere?

Glenda, great posters too!!!

Thanks, guys, here I was out most of the afternoon and you were having a party. I love so many of these ideas. Just to clarify, I am aware that the Dems need a lot of reforming too and it's not like I am crazy about a lot of them. It's just that they are the only viable choice to beat bushco. And I worry if we can survive another Repub admininstration.

These are great, too... love the pimped one. I want to use some of these one day, but I'll give you credit.

The Dems SUCK, but the Reps suck worse. It'd by nice to have a real party represent us one day.

Hope you're having a great day.
