Anti-War Rally in Crawford Texas April 11-16

This is a another reminder to please come to Crawford, Texas, next week for what we hope will be a huge Peace Rally when Cindy Sheehan and Gold Star Families for Peace return to Camp Casey for four days of rallies, performances, teach-ins and more. Also at the heart of this event: Vets for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, Code Pink and more.

Help turn up the heat on Bush and his cronies. Drive, hitchhike, fly, bicycle, do whatever you need to do to get here. I know you may live far, far away, but this will be BIG and folks from all over the country will show up to take advantage of this opportunity to have a voice and make a stand on this issue!

Also, in a related bit of news, the group Codepink is calling for action TODAY Wednesday, April 5. Join CODEPINK in: demanding a debate on Iraq. Tell Congress to show the American troops, the American people and the Iraqi people the respect they deserve. It is time for a full debate on the war in Iraq. Tell them to sign H.Res.543, the discharge petition. Go to their link above for more information on getting involved!

Here are some more pictures of people I met on my last visit who graciously allowed me to take their picures. And, honestly, look at those blue skies, wouldn't you just love to soak up some sunshine with other peace loving activists?

I'm seriously going to consider going to this. It's a long drive, but it'd be worth it.

Hooray for You!
Let me know what I can do to help you out, if you need anything!
Be sure and bring a tent and sleeping bag if you plan to camp onsite.
Also, please sign up at the crawfordpeacehouse.com beforehand so Rena and the others can plan for water and enough facilities. Or you can sign up to volunteer.

I join you all in spirit.

Honestly what's it like being progressive in Texas? I'm not making fun whatsoever. I've never been to Texas but know many who have and it consistently rates as everyone's least favorite state.

Purley anecdotal, I know, but I've only heard good things about Austin.

I have nothing against TX - after all one of my favorite bands have their roots near Dallas, but I thought I'd ask the question.

Stella, If you want to make a financial donation, please go to their website. I'm sure they would appreciate the cash.

Um, Jeremy, it's a long answer. Sadly most of what you hear about this state is colored by the horrible politicians that have emerged, like full-grown werebugs from their larval lairs.

Texas is a big diverse place, with many cultures and many languages. Open-hearted people who will help you in a minute in my experience. Lots of regular people here opened their homes to Katrina survivors last year, for example.

It can be very conservative, especially in rural areas, but it was not always so. My grandfather, a rancher, called himself a "Yellow-Dog Democrat" when Texas was mostly a Democratic State then. His best friend was then Speaker of the House, Carl Albert.

Geographically, there are many types of land, desert in west Texas, coastal plains by the Gulf of Mexico, flat grass prairie in North Texas and piney woods and swamp in East Texas. Austin sits right in the center of all those geographic regions on a river, so I can travel east of town for a few miles and find pine forest, or go south and hit the coast, or west into the desert. The Mexican border town of Laredo is only 200 miles away.

Austin is a diverse and slightly more liberal oasis. Constant great music and talent with a huge high-tech corridor between Austin and San Antonio. Time magazine did a story about 2 yrs ago saying Austin had more PhDs per capita than any city in the world. Lots of folks can read here now.

The summer is hot and humid, but the winters in Austin are wonderful, and you can get outside year round. We have huge parks and hike and bike trails everywhere. Hope that’s not more than you wanted to know. :)

Texas is a divided state and from what I gather there are more anti-war in the state as a whole and anti-Bush is stronger than not.

Yes, poetryman, you are right, there is change in the wind. I do not find it at all difficult to find friends and family members who agree with me politically. And many, many hippies settled here in the 60s and 70s as a result of needing to coming together to get us out of Viet Nam, and their children are now coming of age. My own college-aged kids asked us to march with them against the war several times last year and we participated as a family.

Glenda, i'm new here, so excuse me if this has already been asked and answered, but what about the Goldstar families who are supporters of the president, and the war? Do you know who they are? Do you care about what they have to say? Don't you think it's strange that they never get interviewed by the mainstream media?

Glenda my heart and soul will be there but the rest of me can't make it. Wish it were closer.

I'm glad Rhino brings up this point because we have discussed this on other issues, such as media attention to certain writers. Perhaps the media can be biased, depending on which media you refer to. But this incessant campaign to blame the supposedly liberal media does not address the fact that the Gold Star families FOR the war are not doing much to draw attention to themselves! ANd why should they???

Perhaps we should ask why they are not consistently and passionately demonstrating, sacrificing time? Oh, thats right! They support the status quo! Perhaps they are not getting press because they are not commanding any attention-possibly because they don't need attention! They are not opposing anything!

Further... Anyone who organizes ANYTHING knows that part of organizing is to attract the attention of the media, reach out, do some leg work. I suspect you need an issue though!

Maybe the people you refer to are not doing anything to fuss over because THEY ARE GETTING THEIR WAY. THEY ARE NOT GETTING ATTENTION FOR PROTESTING BECAUSE THEY HAVE WHAT THEY WANT.

When was the last time rich white men protested for wage equity?

WHERE"S THE STORY, RHINO???? "Tonight, we interview smug, content people on the subject of how it feels to be getting their way." Don't be a jackass.

Well, Lily about said it all.

Rhiny, dear, thanks for stopping by. Don't see you here near enough.
You see, that's the beauty of freedom of speech and what makes this country great. Anyone can speak up. Or not. Don't blame Cindy Sheehan if they choose not to say anything.
So does that mean you're not coming to the rally?

At 9:03 PM, Blogger Neil Shakespeare said...

"Whom Would Jesus Bomb?" Well, first of all he would bomb everyone with 'Whom Would Jesus Bomb?' signs, right? Better warn that guy. (Seriously, good luck with the Rally. You are brave people to breathe the same air as bush.)

Thanks for the visit a while back. If you've gone through the Nuts Archive you know that Kelso likey Cindy Sheehan velly, velly much and found himself up-the-pole a bit with a bad bet on W laying $1600 to win $1000 right after "Mission Accomplished". Kelso felt so guilty about cashing that bet, that he gave 1/2 to Code Pink and 1/2 to Gold Star Mothers.

Hope to see you again soon, though, must admit I took your posting re McCain to some very dark places. :)

Neil, You are TOO funny, but Jesus never bombed anyone, it's the people who say they speak for Jesus, who use his name as a way to gain power for themselves, that's who I have a beef with.
He was probably a very nice man who hung out with sinners.

kn- that is impressive, giving money to good people.

I will not be able to make the rally, as i am in NY, and i would rather kick my own ass than be near cindy sheehan. but the gold other gold star families do speak up, they just don't get any coverage. That's the point.

Here is my take on the military families who support the war. They are free to organize their own press releases.

However, having said that, my brother was in the military for 17 years. They were not allowed to talk to the press independently. Any information had to be handled through official channels or there was a boot on their neck. I'm assuming that is still a hard and fast rule, so I doubt many of them feel that they can speak up independently without some kind of negative payback. Loyalty is mandated to make it through the boot camp mentality.

And although I respect your right to voice your opinion, it makes me wonder why you seem to think those on power are being silenced by the press since the press has cowtowed and been loyal to the Bush regime since 9/11.

Go Glenda! Well done. Encouraging. I am thrilled to see the people out there. I just can't for the life of me, figure out why more people don't protest. Very perplexing.

At 8:35 AM, Blogger glenda said...

Thanks, Mary,
Laissez-faire mentality? I know it sucks, and nothing is going to change kind of attitude?
Americans are growing more cynical and demoralized and have come to accept corruption as a government norm.
I am an optimist and think things can change and get better and be more honest and less destructive to our society as well as the other societies we impact.

"I am in NY, and i would rather kick my own ass than be near cindy sheehan."

Best get to kickin', my friend, cause if you don't, when your little party flops it'll feel as if the hand of Truth smacked your rump with the whole of creation...

It'll smart for a few decades, but not much scarring, visible anyway, unless your a nudist.

These American views do not appear else where in the mainstream media that regularly, which is a crying shame. The lot adverticed anti-Americanism is mainly due to the false conviction that you all are warlike religious nuts hell bent to control the rest of the world.
